Turning on sound (thereby turning off vibrate) did the trick. I can now hear your software speaking and making other sounds as indicated in your documentation.
You can also go into the Settings for your device and then look for Sounds & Notifications, which should be on the Personal tab. Go into Sounds and make sure that Programs is checked. That means that you want the device to play sounds for programs.
